PAUL DETTMANN
PAUL DETTMANN

My weekly mix of familiar faces, new releases, and some toons from Britain. This week I'm revisiting some songs from earlier in the year that evoke summertime or a fun, light feeling. Don't worry there is still plenty of darkness. Even summer has nighttime.

A friend tipped me off about the incredible Goldie Boutilier whose new release this week is Goldie Montana, the title track of her forthcoming album that puts St. Vincent in my mind. CMAT and Wet Leg need no introductions for a UK audience but I hope some of my US readers appreciate these songs.

Mose Wilson makes another appearance as I cannot get enough of his subtle cowboy album. There is a trio who have featured before but I include them again because we have more readers now and they're all great summer belters: songs from Aubrey Dale, Kassi Ashton and May Erlewine.

Hot Southern Nights

Sprinklers on the front lawn, frying in the hot sun. I'm really enjoying Swearingen & Kelli at the moment. This one is especially good for summer, and good for kicking off this week's 12. We've had Jayne Kelli as a solo artist before with her songs Sister Golden Hair and Way Too Low. Swearingen & Kelli is a country duo act.

If Summer Was A Man

Raneem Imam is such a fun person and a talented singer. Her debut album was recorded live in a studio and really benefits from that live vibe. She believes strongly in playing music live as a band. Her whole album suits the summer, but this in particular works for August.

Take Me to the Ball

I have been waiting weeks to see what country duo Houston & Lace would do next and now we know! Out this week is a solo vocal from Lacy, a fabulous showcase for her haunting, powerful, yet controlled voice. She's a real star and these two work well together. This is a proper country classic with some subtle pedal steel. I will always (slightly) prefer a duet but this classic Cinderella love song is told from the female perspective. I could listen all day, and have done so.

Sugar Crash

I wrote about Dallas Ugly in May and Sugar Crash always stood out for me. It's a really fun song perfect for warm weather. Who can resist candy on a weeknight, or even during those long office days?

Nothing Ugly About Dallas Ugly
This is my band. I’ve been banging on about stunning female solo artists all winter, and while I admit they were all quite good, they were not bands with male and female voices. I also bang on about duets and the counterpoint between men and women in a band. Fleetwood

The Cliff

I have reviewed this song during the week as it has only just come out but it's a fantastic way to finish this week's playlist.

The Cliff by Anna May
Beautiful, soft acoustic music with a cutting lyric. The Cliff is out now.
