PAUL DETTMANN
PAUL DETTMANN

My weekly mix of familiar faces, new releases, and some toons from Britain. We have Zoee and The Last Dinner Party murdering their boyfriends or husbands. A catchy tune about working class heroes from Mose Wilson and some London songs from Emma Smith and Kinnoha. There are others but it's too hot to mention all of them.

The Things You Can't Unsay

I became deeply immersed in Meghan's world when I got addicted to Humble Again in the winter. It certainly helped me to understand my crazy mood swings a little better. There's a wonderful acoustic version that really showcases her amazing voice. Which is interesting because she did very well on The Voice! Despite being seriously famous she usually responds to my mad DMs and is very open about her challenges as an independent artist on Instagram.

This song is a wonderful feel good summer anthem. I know the lyrics are sort of angry and sound like she's really had it with her bloke but the tune and the vibe for me are brilliantly summery.

Meghan Linsey is My Cup of Tea
I became a bit obsessed with Humble Again and had to take a step back. I think Meghan Linsey is such a star in the making. In my eyes she is already a star. She tells it like it is. Every damn time. Finally I can write about her.

Workin' Man by Mose Wilson

I had the privilege of meeting Mose a couple of weeks ago at a Hannah Juanita show in London. Mose's entire album is out now and is strongly recommended!

Cause I Got You by Mose Wilson
Mose Wilson can sing and write but he’s also a producer. He’s back on top form with this proper Country song that made me properly smile after a long, warm spring day.
Hannah Juanita in Highbury, London
Supported by Mose Wilson and Bryony Dunn on July 9th 2025.

EARLY GRAVE

Leilani Kilgore is a proper guitar rocker and we have featured her before. This week's single, Early Grave (all caps) is another belter. She is quite something on stage, jerking around with her guitar, sweat flying off in all directions. She's brilliant. It comes as no surprise to me that would rather dance herself to an early grave than die slowly of boredom. The quick death should always be preferred to a slow one.

Nothing On Me by Pearl Charles

I already reviewed the Desert Queen album but I love this one, out this week as a single. It's the one that most exemplifies a #ZFG attitude. She'll be gone with the breeze. She's closed off. She's done a runner early in the morning. She was born to be free. But what is that drum sound?

Sorry. Did you miss me? I just spent an hour with Christine McVie's back catalogue. I found what I wanted. The only Mac tune to feature calypso-style steel drums was written by Christine and Bob Welch at Benifold house in England. This song has Did You Ever Love Me written through the middle like bright pink seaside rock. God I love it!

Desert Queen by Pearl Charles
Pearl’s album Desert Queen is available on Bandcamp and physical formats; several of the singles are available to stream.
Pearl Charles at London Moth Club
A No. 55 bus ride to London’s dark eastern underbelly. Would any of us make it out of Hackney alive? Spoiler alert: yes, some of us would.

We Said Forever by Houston & Lace

H&L have a new track out on Friday so I'm afraid you have to listen to We Said Forever again this week. It's really strong.

Winds of Ohio by Iris and The Shade

Iris has been on our Weekly playlist before. They're a great duo from somewhere wild like Ohio and play live regularly. Be Your Girl is especially memorable. [I think they're from California. Ed.]

What Took You So Long? by Emma Smith

Emma might ask herself the same question. This album has been three years in the making but it was worth the wait! I'm looking forward to the album launch show at Ronnie Scott's in London in a couple of weeks. Tix still available!
